brasses that we can reproduce for you.

Brass rubbing is the art of creating the effigy of a brass memorial from a cathedral or church of Great Britain or the continent.  The process uses rag fibre paper and a special wax crayon.

Traditionally, rubbings were done with black crayon on white paper, but gold crayon on black paper is an attractive alternative. Rubbings are an exact facsimile of the original, complete with 500 year old dents and scratches!

Included with the rubbing is a short history of brasses and brass rubbing, and as much biographical information on your image as we have.  The rubbing is mailed with protective paper inside a sturdy mailing tube.

The cost of rubbing and mailing any brass is only $30.00 except where marked.

                  Monumental Brasses

During the middle ages, brass plates were carved and put into churches to commemorate the life of the person buried there.  They show a diverse cross section of society; nobles, merchants, ecclesiastics and children.

Today, brasses and brass rubbings, with their often meticulous detail,  provide contemporary information on armour, costume, religion and society in general.  A brass rubbing is a unique work of art that is not merely decorative, but preserves a piece of history for all of us.
