Castle's Monumental Brass Rubbing
Left: Elizabeth Culpeper, 1634
A little girl of 7 years old. Few brasses were dedicated solely to children at this time, but the engraver was working on one for Elizabeth's grandmother, so he was also commissioned to engrave one for Elizabeth. Perhaps they died of an infectious disease. (The bubonic plague was endemic in London at this time.) She is wearing a veil over her loose hair, and her skirt is split to show a richly embroidered panel.

Left: Anne Awode or Wode, 1512
Anne died in childbirth, along with her twins. She wears a long gown whose front laces can be loosened as necessary for pregnancy. The two babies are wrapped in swaddling clothes, and are not named, an indication they were stillborn or died before being baptised.

Right: Lady Katherine Howard, 1547
A brass and a rubbing showing Lady Elizabeth wearing an heraldic mantle, showing family genealogy.
Above: A rubbing of Ralph and Elizabeth Verney, 1547. He is wearing a tabard and she a mantle, both showing their coat of arms.
