Monumental Brasses were first laid down in England in the late 13th Century.  They existed before this  in continental Europe, and even earlier in the far East.  To begin with, they  commemorated the powerful and wealthy, but gradually the middle class began to be portrayed. An amazing  wealth of contemporary information is discovered through the close examination of  the effigies.

Brass rubbing is the recreation of the image on the memorial.
